Was also thinking perhaps the judge thought being released after 30 days was not enough time served...maybe his celebrity status influenced the early release. Well, send him back to trial and let it play out in the court system.

It also annoys me that actors, producers, etc are trying to get RP released from the Swiss authorities in two parts. First, it shows they feel the law shouldn't apply to them. Second, that they are arrogant to think they have enough clout to get RP released. They should just stick to entertaining us common folks who follows the law.

While understandable what Polanski went through from Manson was horrific, still not sure his "crime" was the first time, but assuming it was the first time he messed with young girls, he has to stand up for his since "confessed/admitted/sex" crime. You cannot excuse the behavior of a victim with another offense. It is what murderers have tried for years....

The part that still gets me is the acceptance that Hollywood's A List still bestows on him. I think that is most disgusting..

I do not at all remember this from when it happened (I could have been in Vietnam?) but from what I've read...

Girl of 13, who may or may not have looked older, goes to what she thought was a modeling appointment (without a parent?)

Once there, RP gives her a drug (Quaalude?) along with Champagne, and then rapes and sodomizes her... while she is asking him to stop

I don't CARE if his mind was messed up from Manson's followers killing his wife Sharon Tate, you just do NOT do that to a girl or woman!

If the original judge (now deceased, I think) grew angry at 30 days when it was supposed to be 90... and was going to put RP in jail for the balance... that is the LEAST he should get now

Fleeing is another thing, and would, I think, require another trial on that charge... with, I am sure, credit for the time he is in a Swiss jail while extradition is fought

I have read that by him running out the original deal is null and void. At least according to some lawyers.

But I have been doing some research into this case. He originally made a plea deal, and part of the deal was for him to go to a prison psyche ward for 90 days. He was released after 30 and THAT was when the judge decided to go back on the deal, or at least it seemed he would, and THAT was when Polanski fled. So Polanski actually was making an attempt to do his time, but the courts decided to play cat and mouse with him. So whether his original sentance was fair or not really doesn't matter. He tried to serve his time, the judge had second thoughts, and out of the country he went.

By running out on the deal, wouldn't that essentially negate his previous plea bargain? Specially since the presiding judge then may now be deceased.

If he goes to jail/prison, you can get bet that he will be OUT of the US just as soon as he is released

As far as what he will/should serve... laws were different then, so I **think** he will serve according to his original deal, with **maybe** some time tacked on for fleeing

It'll be an interesting case to follow, considering the amount of time lapsed since the incident. Another question is would he have to register as a sex offender?

I am guessing it was because of a plea deal he made. He bailed when he thought the then judge was going to reneg on the plea punishment.

I don't think he confessed to rape, I think it was like a misconduct or something lesser.

Can't do enough time if you rape a child if you ask me.. (or really any normal person..)

I doubt he'll do any time if he gets here. I think "time served" as he was in prison back when it happened for a little bit and he's been in jail since his arrest. And of course he's famous...

Someone help me understand this...

According to a recent article, they said if Roman Polanski is extradited back to the US then the max time he can serve is 2 years for having a sexual relationship with (or raping if you will) a minor.

I thought most, if not all, states in the US a pedophile gets at least 10-20 years...why is it that he can only serve 2?

I have to laugh, the Swiss authorities are not granting Polanski bail because they think he is a flight risk. Duh! If they even open the jail door for 5 seconds, he will be out of there so fast and back to France your head would spin.

BTW, thanks for the clip Neko. It kinda makes me sad too to see so many distingushing leading lights of Hollywood giving him a standing ovation for not being able to be there to accept his award. He isn't dead you know. Just a fugitive.

It just sickens me that because the guy may make great movies and while I am not one I guess I don't know but some will say he's an artist.. but I am a mother and to have an auditorium of actors applaud him stood up at the Oscars as if he is some kind of "victim" because he couldn't claim his award in person but know he admitted to drugging and raping a 13 year old girl (no matter what we think of her parents negligence), is awful.

His movies will not say $1 of mine, despite I think they look like a snore fest, but again I'm not an artist....

Doesn't sound like Polanski manned up at all over time..come back, own it, and get it behind you.

Not sure of the background language, but from YouTube you get the idea from watching the reaction of his win at the Oscars. Do they always give standing ovations verses just a sincere applause to the Best Director? (I see you Jack Nicholson, wasn't it your home he did this at?) I...

I agree with you there Neko. No matter my personal opinions on the matter, the guy committed a crime and fled from justice. If any of us had done that, you can bet we wouldn't have celebrities begging to save us.

True about the other celebs, but I'd rather just see them shut up. If they don't want to slam him fine, but to stand up and applaud this jackass is wrong, but anyway.

I have a 13 year old daughter and I don't know how anyone could mistake her for over 18 and she is very mature... I don't buy that, but I would agree it was probably a bad judgment one time issue than his being a serial pedophile.

My understanding is the girl thought she was going to a photo shoot, but other than that, I don't know where the parents were. Certainly enough blame everywhere. I think he should just come back and serve his deal as plead. That judge is gone so he shouldn't get blindsided unless they want to teach him a lesson for fleeing, not sure what they can do there.

I know nothing about the legal ins and outs of this case. What I do know, or at least heard, is that at the time of the incident he did not know the girl was underage. But I have also heard he did know. Drugs were certainly involved and (not making excuses) the horrible Tate murder was probably messing up his mind still. Anyway, when confronted with it, he admitted to having sex with this girl. Then fled the country when it appeared he would be getting more than a slap on the wrist from the judge.

From what I understand, either before or after, the incident, Polanski wasn't into young girls. It sounds to me like a party that went too far. Other questions should be asked though. Who brought this girl there? Where were her parents? I don't know. But I do know that Hollywood is a seductive place. It's a place where the term "casting couch" came into popular saying. Everyone please add or correct me IF I am wrong, but the way I understand this is that Roman Polanski (child rapist prick) has been arrested in Switzerland for his 1970s crime because we have a treaty with them to extradite felons. This man sought haven to France since confessing to the crime as US did not have a similar treaty with France.
