The comcept makes me crazy. It was all nice and dandy when you could show your appreciation to the wait staff for a job well done, but these days it feels more
like an entitlement that is demanded no matter how good or bad the service! What really gets me is the guilt your'e made to feel if you dont tip big or as
expected. Your'e bound to hear something like. "if you dont wantto tip, dont eat at a restaurant", while the restuarnat owner gets away with
paying lousy wages, which we the public subsidize, and the owner walks away with the profits
To get a peek into the world to restaurant workiers, theres a site where you can see what they think. Its not pretty. http://bitterwaitress.info/wp/?page_id=75

I never tip if it's a to go order.
In restaurant it is generally 15 percent, sometimes more depending on service. If I get bad service, such as never refilling a 2 dollor cup of coffee they get
no tip what so ever. I tip by the kind of service I receive, not because it is standard practice.
At places like Old County Buffet where you get everything yourself and all they do is clean the table I don't tip unless I'm with a group of people
where it is more work for the clean up crew.

Skeptik, as a Texan, you've probably heard of Ker's WingHouse? Well, we were at one of the Florida locations last night, and for the first time in a
lonnnggg time, I tipped less than 15% at a sit-down restaurant. The hostess/server took our drink order as she seated us and then came back about 10 minutes
later with our drinks and to take our food order. No problem so far. But then, after bringing our food to us, she didn't return to our table for over
half an hour, and then when we did finally see her she was whizzing by down the aisle. When we finally got our check, we'd been incorrectly charged for an
additional entree, and it took us another ten minutes to flag her down about the mistake. Then, once we got a corrected check, she didn't show up to take
our payment for yet another ten minutes... and this was in a restaurant that was practically dead! She had only one other table to attend to! It was
late, and other than the patrons at the bar...

Several years ago my wife and I vacationed in Ixtapa, Mexico. My wife speaks Spanish and spoke to the maids. Now this is back in the late 1980's and the
maid said she cleaned in 2 different hotels (one in the morning and another after lunch) for $7.50 per day from each hotel. So a couple of bucks tip is a big
deal to someone getting $15 per day. IIRC the minimum wage in the USA was around $3.50/hour at the time.

Skeptik you're to funny - But I agree with you. The traveler is easy prey. However, a friend, who has spent most of his adult life traveling with different
Broadway shows, shared this "Tip" - He always leaves a dollar or two on the pillow for the cleaning lady/person and I will have to say my Husband and
I started the same thing while traveling. It has been surprising what we find in the room when we come back. Extra towels, extra choclates, the room seems
cleaner. When we traveled to Ireland - those cleaning people just loved us - probably thought we were crazy American tourist but I know from listening to the
group we where in we received the best service. On the day we left - we put all of our foreign money on the pillow - lord knows how much we left - Crazy
Americans!

I love to tip with good service and a waitstaff that has personality. I don't usually go by percentage it's all in the attitdue. Crappy service =
crappy tip! And I will always speak...

So do you tip the car shuttle driver when you park your car at the off-site airport car park lot? I feel a little guilty if they hop out and take the bags
from my car and load them into the shuttle then hop up to take my bags out at the airport, so I usually tip $1usd per bag since my company reimburses me for
trip expenses. When I pay $9 per day for my car to sit in an airport lot, I don't feel too charitable and figure the lot is making $9000 per day to
provide a parking space for travelers to park their cars.

My other pet peeve is the hotel charging $18 per night for my rent car to spend the night in the hotel parking lot when I am already paying $180 per night to
sleep in the room. Then there is the 10% room tax and 10% airport rent car tax that all visitors pay for the privilege of visiting a city. One time I went to
Orlando for a meeting and asked if this was the "keep Shaquille O'Neil" tax when Shaq was negotiating a contract and holding...

Not sure where Cyrus is getting the flack from, and after her stripper pole dance at the Teen Choice Awards (or whatever) I am not her biggest defender, but if
that was local, they would be too hard on her. I wouldnt' leave a tip on a take out and I like to think I'm a decent to good tipper, normally 20% for a
sit down restaurant. For some reason, bartenders love me????

This new "Tip Cup" thing at some counter service places though bug me.... I never know who or what.

I do tend to leave the change to the drive through I get my coffee from every morning because it's EVERY (work) morning, and other places I go a lot.. but
where is the line?

I so want to put a "Tip Cup" on my desk and see what I get.... just for laughs...

The other one is these town run recreation sports programs that parents have to pay to participate or have their kids stand outside...

Well, I'm a cheap SOB and tip 15% when at a sit down restaurant when the waiter/tress takes my order from a menu and brings me the food and fills up my
water/iced tea (do you Canucks and Northerners drink Iced Tea year round like Texans?). If the service is great and bread is brought, I'll go up to 20%.
If I have to hunt for the waiter and wave my glass in the air, the tip goes down to 10%. If they really have an attitude, I leave nothing and don't come
back for fear they will spit in my food the next time.

At a buffet, where I get my food myself and all they do is refill my drink, I usually leave around 10 to 15% begrudgingly. In a cafeteria, I don't tip.
If I go pick up a phoned in to-go order, I don't tip. I don't tip at fast food places.

they're not tipped, they're getting taxed on money they didn't receive... Which sucks, but from what I understand The tips they DO receive are MUCH
higher than what gets reported... It usually works out in the server's favor, overall...

Cashiers are paid a higher wage than waitstaff... Their tips are NOT estimated and reported to the government as taxable income... I generally don't tip

But what I have to wonder is what and who is appropriate to tip and why? From what I understand, the original concept behind tipping was to reward a service
person for a good job, not a job they were already doing and getting paid for.

Now I understand tipping wait staff. If someone is bringing something to me, they deserve a little extra on top of their wages. Same goes for delivery
people. Not only are they doing me a favour, they are also out of pocket if someone stiffs them, and THAT happens alot. So I don't mind giving them an
extra...
