Last weekend was a big movie weekend for me. I saw Miracle, Big Fish, and Lost in Translation, all while I liked for one reason or another. I am also looking forward to seeing Secret Window with Johnny Depp.

What else looks good? Anyone else like the movies I mentioned?

Anna confides in her sister Alex, and they want to find out the truth.
Dinner for Shmucks and Toy Story 3. Toy Story, definitely worth it even for adults. Very cute

"Dinner for Shmucks" was pretty good, better than I expected especially after "Date Night". "Date Night" was disappointing..so as a fan of "The Office" I gave Steve Carell another shot. It wasn't perfect, lots of stupid parts, but there was some subtle humor that was pretty good. Without giving a lot away, the scenes with the stalker were the best. Paul Rudd was pretty good too.

Elizabeth: The Golden Years - Blah...wasn't what I was expecting. Only got this because I liked the first Elizabeth with Cate Blanchett. 5 tops, may be more like 4.

The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift - This movie got bad reviews and I almost didn't get it, but the completionist that I am I bought it along with the first 2 (waiting on TFaTF4 to come down in price). Wasn't sure what to expect, but I do like this movie. Sure some of the action shots are exaggerations but nothing worse than the first 2 flicks. I'd give it an 8.

Legion...was hoping this was a movie about angels vs demons, turned out it wasn't. But the battle scene in the diner between the humans and the angel Gabriel was pretty cool, specially how he uses his wings to block the bullets. Not a great movie, not good either, but decent enough.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button...good movie. Sad, though, in good way...brought a tear to my eyes. Was amazed at how make-up can make both Cate and Brad looking so young. Speaking of which, Julie Ormond looked older than I thought she is. Still remember her from Legend of the Falls, starring opposite Brad Pitt.

2012...potentially good story line but some of the action made it too unreal.
Just watched Avatar, and WOW! Great story line, great CG...but I don't understand why critics tried to ruin this film by saying this is anti-US film (article I read awhile back). Sure, there are some parallel with the terms "shock and awe", "win their minds and heart", blah blah blah...but for me it was more of a wake-up call on how corporations are destroying our environment at all costs for the sake of turning a buck.
Definitely a 10+...

Finally decided to rent My Sister's Keeper. It was good and I did cry, but I think the original ending as per the book would have been even better. I don't understand why they changed it. I guess they go by reaction to test screenings but still, I wish they had stayed true to the book. Jodi Picoult's books never have the ending you think they'd have so hopefully, this is the only one they make a movie of.

I'm an avid reader so it's hard to see the movie before the books. I'm usually not that disappointed in the movies because the books are almost always better. I read the Harry Potter series before seeing the movies and enjoyed both. But it pisses me off when they change the story to make a better story (like you were saying about the Harry Potter movies). I may rent My Sister's Keeper and hopefully won't be too disappointed. Jodie Picoult's books are usually very depressing so making a feel good movie out of them is probably difficult. People want happy endings I guess and her books don't have them.

Ck, my remedy for that is, I see the movies BEFORE I read the books. The books are ALWAYS better, but that shouldn't detract from the quality of the movies. For example, if I had read all of the Harry Potter books prior to watching the movies, they all would have been very disappointing to me. As it stands, I have enjoyed the movies and watched them over and over with my kids.

The last movie and the upcoming 2 are the exceptions. With the writers' strike causing a delay in movie releases, I couldn't stand it anymore, and I read all the Harry Potter books. The Half Blood Prince was soooooooooo upsetting to me! I get that there is so much packed in those books that they have to selectively leave things out, but it pisses me off royally when they ADD things that weren't in the book to begin with! What's the point? It's not like there isn't enough drama on the pages in front of you to make a great story/movie!

And............. look for it to get worse!...

I recently dropped my (expensive) DirecTV movie channels in favor of a (less $$) Netflix account... and bought the Netflix "box" to connect to my Internet account for streaming video

Netflix claims 10,000 streaming titles, but http://instantwatcher.com/ shows more like 8,000 - with some of them being series with multiple episodes per title, so the overall number could be close to 10k

What I have watched in the past month... (and my 1-to-5 Netflix rating)

Bad/Cheesy plot and/or acting
The Alphabet Killer Eliza Dushku is detective who has a breakdown - 2
Driven to Kill - Chopsocky with Steven Segal - 2
Lightspeed - SciFi that was REALLY bad - 1 'cause I can't give a 0
Wilder – Pam Grier Detective who breaks the rules to get the bad guy - 1

Good
The Ugly Truth – Katherine Heigl fairly standard RomCom - 3
Really Good
