But what I have to wonder is what and who is appropriate to tip and why? From what I understand, the original concept behind tipping was to reward a service person for a good job, not a job they were already doing and getting paid for.
Now I understand tipping wait staff. If someone is bringing something to me, they deserve a little extra on top of their wages. Same goes for delivery people. Not only are they doing me a favour, they are also out of pocket if someone stiffs them, and THAT happens alot. So I don't mind giving them an extra couple of dollars.
But why should I be expected to give more money to someone for showing up at the counter and paying for something they would be doing anyway? Do we tip the guy who gives us a parking ticket? Do we tip the cashier at the corner store? How come people that work at resteraunts (and now coffee shops) expect to get a tip? And if you don't tip them, you get attitude.
To me a tip is a reward, not a right. That is why I don't understand these "self-service" places that put out a tip jar. Huh? I do all the work and you want extra cash?
