My son was quizzing me this evening on important events in the past millennium, as compiled by Life Magazine in their book The Life Millennium. The
97th most influential event was the founding of the modern Olympic games in 1896. According to the article, the original Olympic games were banned in 393 A.D.
by Emperor Theodosius I because the Games "had devolved into a crude carnival rife with pro athletes, betting, bribery and all manner of cheating."
It's good to know that as a society we have risen above those crude times and our modern games are free from any of these corruptions.
