On the way home yesterday I heard a radio report that "someone" had worked with the father to set everything up... but, of course, that could just be a rumor
If true... using a 6 year old kid as part of a scam is really low

If there is any PROOF that this was a publicity stunt engineered by the father... he belongs in jail

My opinion on this was that if it was a hoax, it wasn't actually planned. I think what happened was the kids were playing with the balloon, loosening
it's tethers. The dad and mom went to go and fix it, and the balloon took off by accident. I saw the video, and they were pretty upset by it getting
loose. They probably questioned the older boys, who immediately pointed the finger at the youngest boy (you know how kids are. Anyone but me!) who probably
DID go into hiding. Kids do it all the time when they think they are going to get in trouble. The parents panicked and called the police, couldn't find
there son, possibility of him being in the balloon itself, then you know the story from there.
But I think once they realized that all was well, and found the missing child, they probably realized they may get some publicity out if this, if not a reality show, which they seem to be big fans of. But I do think the parents fear was real. Ask any parent whose kid goes missing for even a second, and they will tell you they don't care who they have to call to get the child back at whatever cost and future embarrassment should they be crying wolf. There is one thing I have to question though. I saw the video of the initial take-off of the balloon itself. Yes the parents were panicking, but the balloon itself was a lot smaller than it appeared, and it looked pretty flimsy. I think it is a big stretch to think that the thing could hold the weight of a six year old (who can be pretty heavy! Just ask a favourite uncle.) But in circumstances where you don't really know what is going on, people do not tend to think logically, so I will forgive the parents. But I won't forgive the children. I think they are the ones behind all this. Childish prank gone wrong. And of course, now they are on TV and are stars! Brats. |

I don't think it was a hoax... From what I've heard when this was all going down, right when they found him the news reporters asked him to show them
where he was, so he climbed back up there... When Larry King asked about it he said it was for a "show" which is what the news reporters told him...
I do think the father isn't too bright... That much was evident to me... |

Article says mom admits it was a hoax http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE59M5J720091023
We all know that news articles are sometimes wrong... but if this is true, one or both parents are going to jail, and there will be a BIG bill for them to pay restitution Now, I wonder if both parents will go to jail, and the kids will be given to relatives are put in foster homes... this is just SO sad for the kids, that they were used by their parents (mostly father?) for TV fame |

Hmm... both went for plea bargains (no jail time, just reporting to a parol officer) to keep the mother from possibly being deported
I would have thought she was a US citizen by now... can you still be deported? |
